I'm new to this forum and hope this is where I'll get some answers . Actually I was referred to this site by a Buck Rep. Here's the deal . Just recently purchased a Buck Tempest 295-BLX online. Once I got it I noticed that there wasn't a Year stamp on the blade nor was I able to see any kind of model # except for the # 2 sticking out from under where the pivot is . My first thought was that I was sold a second , well not the case according to Buck. What I have is a knife that slipped through quality control with the blade incorrectly stamped . It has BUCK U.S.A. on the blade along with what should be the model # in the wrong place and no visible Year stamp . The date on the box is 12-15-04 . I carried the knife for one day and put it away as soon as I spoke to Buck . They said that collectors sometimes really like these pieces that slip through quality control and to try this site to see if anyone would be interested .They specifically said that there are some Buck collectors that hang on this site. I don't know that I'm in the right section but would somebody please be able to let me know what to do ? Otherwise Buck said to just send them the knife with a letter and that they would gladly replace it with a current production one with all the right stamps in the blade . Thanks for any help and this site rocks . Jon ..

Have recently purchased 3 Buck's---a Rush--a 110---and a 119-----NONE of them have date stamps on them---although the 110 and 119 have a nice little Idaho state outline on them.

Take it out and use the darn thing-----nothing special.

That outline of the state is your year stamp . Never said that it was special just one that slipped past quality control , that alone is sometimes enough for collectors to want them . Same as if you received a mistamped quarter someone out there is sure going to want that mistake in their collection .

We have a Buck Knives Forum here. You might find what your looking for there. Just go to the top of the screen and click on MANUFACTURERS and that'll get ya where ya wanna be.:D

Welcome to the Forums, BTW!

Thanks for the welcomes ! Would any of you Buck aficianados be able to tell me if it's worth hanging onto or auctioning off , or should I just use it or send it back for one with the correct stamps on the blade .. Any input here is greatly appreciated . Thanks .. Jon .

...Any???... :D

Post some pics of it, especially the blade stamp. Scan it if you don't have a camera.

Larry Oden of the BCCI should see this eventually. He can probably steer you to a knowledgeable source of info...not that the others here aren't knowledgeable... :p

In my personal view...I would not send it back...I'd keep it...but that's just me...

There really isn't anything to show . The only thing that you see is BUCK U.S.A and the # 2 just peeking out from under where the blade meets the handle by the pivot . The other side and the rest of the blade shows nothing . May I ask why you would keep it ? Thanks for the reply.

I've never seen that particular marking; it might help me [or others] who come across something similar to recognize it as unique...

And that's also why I would keep it...I like things that are unique...When someone whips out his "Number 857 of 1000" Tempest Commemoratives, I can show mine and say, "No others like it!"... :D

Understood . The #2 that is sticking out from under where the blade meets the handle by the pivot is the beginning of the model # that is stamped in the wrong spot on the blade . According to BUCK rep. that's all that it could be . There is also no Steel grade stamp anywhere on the knife , which I also found odd. I'll see if I can't get a coule pictures of her and post em up . Thanks again .. J.

A little bit more on "collectivity"...

A manufacturing plant I used to work in would sell "defects" in the company store. These were fully functional products, but cosmetically flawed in some way (like the mis-struck number on your knife). It was a way of recouping something from them rather than destroying them. They would also be marked with a grinder swipe across the brand name, to make sure they would not be returned for refund or exchanged. Obviously, these would not have as much value as a true defect which slipped through QA.

There are people who collect true manufacturing oddities. To them, your knife might be of higher value than if it were new.

But as mentioned in another thread here, your knife might be a "setup knife", that was flawed during the setup of the stamping process [or some other part of the line] but was used subsequently to set up other stations and was allowed to continue and be "finished" rather than waste another perfectly good knife in setups. It might not have all the processes performed (like heat treat/annealing) and therefore might not be suitable for use.

I suppose it all depends on what you intend the knife to do. Do you want a carry tool, or a showpiece...

The knives that I own are used as carry tools EDC'S if you will . I expect them to perform under whatever conditions I toss at them . To me a knife is a tool , meant to be used ( not abused ) . Just recently sent BUCK my 181 Odyssey folder w/ ATS-34 Combo blade for resharpening and tune up after 6 years of loyal service . It is my understanding that this knife ( the Tempest ) slipped through QC as per my conversation w/ a BUCK Rep. Should a collector or someone here be that interested in the knife I will gladly sell it and just get my self another one or just use my BM Grip. 24/7 . Worse case scenario is I just send it back to BUCK for a current production one with all the stamps on her . BUCK already said that this knife still holds the BUCK warranty and that I could use it as normal and send it in when needed or replace it , up to me really. I'll see if I can't get some pic's taken today and post them .. Thanks again ... Jon ......
Quick note . The BUCK rep. also assured me that this is not a factory second as it would have an FD stamped in the blade to show that it was a caught mistake at the plant. This is truly from what they gather one that got past them .

Finally took some pictures so here goes. Once again if anyone is interested please let me know otherwise I'll probably just return it for a replacement . Thanks .. Jon ..

What looks like a scratch in the last picture is simply light reflection , this knife is brand new never used .

Quite interesting...Does anyone know if this model (produced this year) normally has the Idaho tang stamp on it???

Yep,
That is a stamp that slipped through with the wrong placement. The lack of an Idaho stamp next to the Buck on the backbone would indicate it was a 2004 Knife. If we had caught it, it would have been routed to the company store with and "FB" marked on the blade and sold as a factory blemish.

Jeff

Jeff,
Should'nt it also have the type of steel stamped on the the blade as well ? And the year stamp should be the one for 2004 , not sure off hand what that was , instead of being non existent correct ? Thanks again .. Jon ..

The year code will be next to the model #, which in this case is buried under the handle. The 2004 was an upside down 'T'. Any blade not stamped with our steel type will be 420 HC. We only stamp the steel type on our higher end steels.

Jeff

For what it's worth, there any many people who collect 'oddities' such as yours. From different blades used on a knife to factory reworkings to things such as yours. Its a good start on a section of your collection.

Thanks Guy G that's what I thought . My thing is this I'm not into collecting oddities such as this , I usually just carry a knife and use it when necessary . I'm going to do one of two things here , if someone is interested in this piece for their collection then contact me and make an offer otherwise it goes back to BUCK to be replaced by a current production one with all the right stamps in all the right places to be used as an EDC . Thanks for the reply ..
