Hi there I have a couple of newbie questions to knife collecting. First of all I was wondering how some of you catalog your collection, what info do you include and is it all on the computer nowadays??

Also I am thinking about starting a collection for each of my sons (5 & 3), maybe 2 knives a yr (B'days and Xmas) looking at the Case pocket knives. Don't want to spend more than $35-50 but want to be able to have them hold their value with the possibility of increasing in the distant future. Any thoughts from the experts out there??

Thank you, I have learned alot already from this sight and look forward to much more!!!

I am not an expert, but I think Case would be the way to go. Member here tend to think Case knives except for CV blades are more for collecting than using. I know some case knives have went up in value depending on the model and handle material. With Case you should also stay in your price range. I hope this helps, John

What about those blue handled Case models? I have always thought they were pretty neat looking but not sure how collectible they are. Definitely a good idea to teach your kids knives are tools, not toys and how to be safe around them though.

It's funny you should mention that, I was just looking at those. Thanks.
As far as safety is concerned I routinely go over gun and knife safety with them, plus they won't know I am doing this till they get a bit older. All I need is a call from son's kindergarten teacher asking me why my son is talking about all his knives!!:D :D

Thanks again!!

Welcome to the forums.

If you want to make an investment; I would suggest a savings bond, or a pre-paid college fund. Knives may, or may not, retain their resale value. I have considered using some older ethnographic knives to help motivate the kids to learn about the history of various cultures; and, they can certainly be used to develop responsible behavior. But, if a cash return is what you are primarily looking for; there are better vehicles available.

thunder23js-- I wouldn't concern myself too much with future value. More knives don't go up in value than do. Buy and collect what you like, it's about investing in you and your kid's pleasure and connection rather than any resale value. Case is excellent for classic patterns as is Camillus. Don't know much about the importance of cataloguing, have never felt the need to.
