The blade design has been described as a Nogales clip point. Is this in reference to a specific blade shape, from Spain or Mexico, or the name of a bladesmith or designer?

And how is its performance as a piercing or stabbing instrument?

It's fine. Available only in serrated pattern, the blade shape facilitates slashing moves. It bites viciously whatever is being slashed, but the point is strong for penetrating jabs, too. The Voyager X2 also is a worthy contender and can be had in serrated and plain. The 5-inch Vaquero is a very nice knife and is reasonably compact. As far as the name, it's the type of a knife. Try a Google for more info.

The 6-inch and 5-inch Voyagers.

Here's my early model made in Japan 6" Vaquero making my B/M 630 look small.
This knife gives a lot of reach with it's 13" overall length and it's a wicked slasher.
