Some time back I took a tour of Kershaw, and just for shits and giggles I thought I might voice my opinion about Kershaws coming "dull" out of the box. For the record, I also work for a large manufacturer and am familiar with quality control issues and have toured many other manufacturers.
The short form answer is that any knife that comes out of the box dull, did NOT get that way leaving Kershaw. It happened after the fact, either from a secondary source doing a little light testing on a model, all the way to someone actually using one and selling it as new. Kershaw checks each knife before it goes out the door, not every other knife.. or every 10th knife or anything like that. From what I understand, these employees are responsible for their own quality control and I'm sure held accountable, as with many manufacturers. The intangible element that you can only see when you are there, is a pride in what they are doing.
The beautiful thing about Kershaw is that it really doesn't matter and they won't question an issue of dullness. They stand by their products and will do everything reasonable (and many times go way beyond) to make things right. Thomas isn't going to argue about a knife coming out of the box new and dull. Frankly he doesn't have to, because there's nothing to be defensive about.
Kershaws come SHARP out of the box new. New buyers should be confident that if their knife comes from a reliable source, they will be very happy. And if something has happened to that knife before it gets to you, fear not because Kershaw will be right behind you.
