so a few months ago, i dyed a couple of my sheaths black (i used black Fiebing's dye), but recently i've been doing some more work on them, and i've noticed the dye starting to come off on my hands, my question is, is there some kind of spray finish or something that im suppose to put on it after i dye it. i just thought that you guys would know the answer. thanks

You need to rub that off. Use a paper towel until no more comes off. You may find it'll need another application. There are some good threads here specific to black dye. It is the most troublesome color in my experience. Good leather, an initial coat of another dark color, a bit of conditioner mixed with the dye to help it penetrate and Pro Oil dye all help.

Tan-Kote has been a good finish for me, but I prefer beeswax for the mellow, supple finish.

A brilliant finish is : soft gel (semi gloss) from Golden Gel mediums, NY USA.
Quite easy to apply with a damp cloth in more layers if you want, without striping or sweeping ,dries up in a minute, it is easy to mix with coloured waterbased inks and pigmentpowder like aluminium or copper
and most important :it doesnot come of.

Black dyes are indeed a difficult question, one option is to dye on lukewarm, wet leather (if there are no motives in the leather) the pores of the leather are fully open than and the leather will accept the dye very easy, apply the dye two or tree times.
an other option is dying with steelwool and vinegar

Is that the stuff for picture transfer? The stuff I looked up seems to be clear and you add your own pigment (like you mentioned).

I'm a little confused because it's not recommended for leather, at least in its role as a transfer, but I'm intrigued.

That is the one ..
I think the manufacturer never tried it on leather.
I did however and i was happiely surprised about the results.
Very nice stuff.certainly worth trying.
