whats up mangs,,,,

I had some questions concerning the tube handle fasteners on my busses.

1. what is the best way to remove them without damaging the handle slabs?

2. where can I get replacements?

3. and finally, what is the best way to install the replacements?

I wanted to do some stripping/satining but thought it would be better to remove the slabs first, except that I don't know anything about the fasteners.

any info is greatly appreciated.

To me that is the best answer: send it in.

That way you don't have to worry about messing it up and they can pretty much give you whatever slabs you want. For them it is a piece of cake to swap them.:D

The tube rivets can be drilled out, but secure the knife first. A member here was cut badly when the blade spun around on him. Let's be careful out there.

.

The hollow rivets are .250" dia. so, if you use a 1/4" dia. drill, you can basically cut off the swedged head and push out the rivet on the other side. As far as replacements go, unless you find someone that has the color, style and material type that they removed, you would have to make them from scratch. There are several styles of handle fasteners, hollow tube/rivets, solid, Corby bolts (like Dozer uses), some have used a threaded sleeve with countersunk screws on each side. The hollow rivets, solid fastener and the Corby bolts all are done best with some special counterbores or swedging dies.
