I’m wanting to try some decorative file work on a knife for the first time. The steel is all ready heat treated and I don’t have the ability to unheat treat it and HT it again.
So basically I’m looking for any tips, recommendations, warnings, and advice from people who know more than I. Will I be able to file hardened steel?
If it helps the steel is QSP’s d2.
And one last thing, I did take a quick look for threads about this and didn’t see any. If any of you know of such a thread feel free to point me in that direction to save us all some time.
Appreciate the input,
Dan

I’ll practice on some stuff and see how it goes. I’ll let you know what I decide. Thanks for the advice y’all

Well, I took Eric’s advice of practicing first. I used the blade of a $4 mystery steel knife from the early days of collecting. That honestly went well, so I started to file the blade I was actually working on. It was much slower going, so I decided to use a bench grinder to get the groves started and then finish them by hand. It so went down hill from there. It took off material faster than I was expecting and there was no going back. Ended up having to take off way more material than I was planning on to make it even close to even (and it still doesn’t, but I decided to quit before I made it worse). The original plan was to have the file work on the spine, not grinder work on the side. I’m not proud of it, but it was a learning experience. Thanks again for all the advice, and congrats if you’ve made this far.
