I recently acquired a Boa 1580MCST and after researching it on here I am more confused than ever. It is CPM440V steel and tip down carry only. When you rotate the blade there is 12 00 stamped on the blade that becomes visible. I read that this is the manufacture date (December 2000). On another thread I read that the MCST was only manufactured in 2002 and there were only 311 made. It can't be both so can someone shed some light on it for me? Anyone know when this knife was made and how many?
Thanks
John

Thanks! Can you tell me what year it was manufactured? If it was 2002, what does the 12 00 stamped on the blade mean if anything?

The 1580MC Boa was regular production from late 2001 thru 2003 and the 1580MCST was around for 1 year (2002). As far as total pieces the 1580MC tallied 394, and the 1580MCST 311.

As Thomas has said, the regular production dates were late 2001 thru 2003. However, I have a few of the MC and MCST knives that are marked 12 00 (Dec 2000). Some of mine are drilled for tip up / tip down. I have one DLC coated one that is drilled tip up / tip down, right or left handed, no BOD, and the etchings are in a copper/gold color. Others are tip up only, tip up / down righty and tip up / down right and tip down left. These seem to be rare birds.

In 2000, it won the IWA “International Knife of the Year" award, so there had to be a handful produced prior to 2001. IIRC, the date stamps didn't begin until late 2001.

It may well be you have one of the "rare bird Boas" that are floating around.

Thank you. Interesting history. It's what makes collecting fun .

Great Score, I love my Boa, if you really think about it, it's a bit old, I've had it for quite a while. Great knife!

I contacted Kershaw about the Boa and this is what they sent me today:
"Hi John,

The Multi Colored Boa came out in mid 2000, and was discontinued at the end of 2002. It was a regular production knife, so it wasn't limited in any way. We don't know how many were actually built, as we changed computer systems back in 2003 and all records before then were purged. I would say the number would be in the thousands, maybe like 5 or 6 thousand were built. Your knife was built in December 2000.

If you take the knife apart and look at the part of the blade that is normally unseen under the pivot you'll see the date of manufacture lasered on the blade. I used to have one and I believe mine said "Aug 02".
