What grits of paper do you use? I see some people start with 600 and finish with 1600, but I can't find anything finer than 600 in the stores.

Is waterproof sandpaper the same as wet/dry sandpaper?

Will using this method to put a convex edge on my blades remove the black coating? I mean is it just the edge that makes contact with the paper, or most of the blade?

thanks
Will

You'll have to go to places like Auto Paint and Bodyshops for the finer grit. I like 2000 for polishing. I tried the sandpaper/mousepad thing and gave up on it. Benchstones and the Sharpmaker are so much more fun to me. I do use the 2000 grit to polish scratches out of blades - It works fabulous doing that.

There are various mail-order knife-supply shops that carry the finer grit papers. Haven't looked there myself lately, but you can check www.texasknife.com , www.jantzsupply.com , www.knifeandgun.com

Personally, if I were doing the mousepad method for the first time on a knife, I would start with 400 grit paper. And I would put masking tape over the rest of the blade to protect it in case I got a little sloppy.

Then go to 800 grit, and then strop.

It depends what I want. Rough hogging to pull a grind into a convex? 80 to 100. Rough edge for beating? 220. General purpose? 400 or 600. Fine edge? 1000. Polished? 2000.

I can get them all from any auto parts store.
