Questions about my new motor

I had a friend point out an ad in the local paper about motors for sale. He had a 2HP Baldor for $90.00 in the box. Well I called and talked to him about it, figuring it would already be sold. It was a Brand new, still in the plastic in the box, single phase, 3450 rpm Baldor. Turns out he had bought a lot of motors and was just turning them around, he had 19 2 hp!! I picked one up!

Now the problem: it is not TEFC. I did not feel that that would be a big issue, escpecially for the price. But what method do you reccomend the most for trying to protect an open motor? I have seen about using nylons, but what about heat build-up and melting the materials? A friend suggested using coffee filters. I forgot to ask him about fastening them on. What about using several layers of cheese-cloth? jWould that do the job without worrying about heat hassles?

personally I think I got a good deal, even if I do have to worry about filtering it out. Thank you for your input.

Take care.

i have a old 2 hp (not baldor) that i fire up the air compressor on every few days, and blow all the grit out.

I use the nylons for a filter, works pretty well for me. I have a 2hp motor from Harbor Freight, it works great! Here's a picture where you can see the motor set behind and to the left of my homemade grinder with the black panty-hose stretched over and around the motor's shaft. I have not seen it get hot or otherwise interfere with the motor at all yet. You can really tell the panty-hose is at least working somewhat because of the junk that's stuck on the outside! Every few days or so I get my leaf blower out and point the end of it into the motor and blow anything that got through the filter out.

Andy, How ya doing buddy? Haven't seen ya for a while, hope all is well.To answer your question, yes nylons will work, so will coffee filters.I have several non-TEFC motors running with no protection and have been for about ten years.I just vacumm them after a day of grinding or buffing. You could also build a small wood cover with a couple of pieces of air conditioning filter mounted.Cut some holes in the cover and mount the filters on the inside.Good luck,Dave. :)

Thank you, gentlemen.

This makes me feel a bit better about the motor not being sealed. There are more of these floating around in use like this than I was figuring.

Derek, I think it was your posts on your grinder that I got the thought of nylons in the first place!

Dave, Doing well, thank you. How about yourself? I was kind of hoping to see you at Gator show, but if i remember right you run a hectic schedule, especially on Saturdays! Maybe you will have the chance to hop on over for a little while on the 16th for the Riverland show in Dunnellon. I was "voluntered" for secretary, by my wife no less! I also finally joined up for membership in the FKA.

Take care.

Andy
