Questions about my older Buck 303 Cadet

I have a Buck 303 that I bought back in about 1978, I believe.

The stamp on the tang includes 303 >. Can anyone tell me if there is any significance to the >? Looking at images on the internet shows several different characters following the 303 in many images.

I'd also like to know who was the actual manufacturer of the knife and what the blade steel is. The medallion on the black handle is oblong with the encircled word BUCK.

Just curious. It's given me excellent service.

I don't know much about them, but the > next to the 303 indicates that the knife was manufactured in 1987.

There will be a member along shortly that I'm sure can give you all you need to know about the knife.

Plumber is correct. Your knife was made in 1987; it is the third year of actual Buck manufacture since Buck took over making the entire knife, previously manufactured by Camillus, in 1985. I think that the blade material is 425 modified. 300 Bucks will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Only thing I could add is a photo for the sheer joy of it....300

Different versions of 303s stopping with 1990, Knife in question is third knife down on the right.

Ok!

First time I believe I've seen reference to a 425 modified steel, so I know nothing about it (other than it gets the job done for me).

Thanks, everyone. Much appreciated.

Edit: Well, know I see the post about 425 modified on the board. Perfect timing :)
