Questions about Ontario TAK D2

My main question is, can one get an Ontario TAK D2 without the blade coating?

The reason I ask is that some internet knife stores show it without any blade coating, but Ontario's website shows only coated ones. What's up?

Also, feel free to add any thoughts you have about the TAK D2. I think I am going to get one, but never hurts to learn as much as possible! :)

when the 1st TAK D2's came out they had a bead blast finish. now they're black coated. that's why you see some in bead blast and some in black. the new ones are black unless there are retailers with the old ones.

i have the RAT-7 D2, not the TAK, so im not sure if it's totally relevant but i'll give my opinion anyways. in short the RAT-7 D2 is a good knife but not worth the price. my RAT-7 came slightly bent and the spine is VERY roughly finished. unacceptable for me. it doesn't affect performance but how can cheap chinese knives be finished better than this blade? the micarta slabs didn't match up to the tang 100% but it wasn't uncomfortable or anything. it just affects the looks. YMMV this is only my opinion.

for a little more cash i'd recommend a swamp rat.

Ontario's QC is fairly low, however their customer service is fairly solid now, both through email and regular mail. I tried to contact them a few years back with no success, but just recently it was no problem so you might want to drop them an email. I would not want D2 in such a blade though due to its brittle nature, get the 1095 one if you want that style of knife. Plus the D2 ones are ground thicker because Ontario would not spend the money to grind it as much as the 1095 ones, ref recent thread in the survivial forums.

Thanks for the info. I have heard a lot about these RAT/TAK knives having fit/finish issues so it seems like a pretty good chance one I get will too. With the thicker grind, coating, and heft, I think it's not the knife for me.
