Questions about possibly buying a sword from a guy in Pakistan

I am thinking of buying a custom sword from a smith in Pakistan. I have read good and bad things about Pakistani Damascus. It would be 36” long with 176 layer Damascus, rosewood handle with copper wrapping and brass hilt and pommel. Cost is $250 shipped with sheath.
I wish I could post pics of it, but don’t have imgur or flicker accounts.

What is the general thought in these swords?

Just transfer the 250$ to my bank account and save yourself the disappointment. You’ll be much happier with nothing.

You're going to have to do a ton of research on the individual smith and see what his reputation is like, and info is going to be very hard to find. I've seen decent stuff out of Pakistan, believe it or not, but honestly, it's a crapshoot.

Edit: I now see that it is a sword that is already made. I thought you were comissioning a one-off through a broker. Never mind, stay away.

It is going to be made to order, I am just wanting one that is the same as one of his previously created swords.

Well, the only Pakistani knives I have are from CFK that I bought off of Amazon before I knew any better. (This company has some fun history). One of them has unfinished micarta and is of questionable steel integrity and the other has a blade edge that has an "S" shape. It's impossible to sharpen out the curves without removing a half inch of blade stock. I also have a good buddy who carry's a Pakistan Damascus fixed blade in his truck. It won't hold an edge at all and the blade is very thick behind the edge.

I think for the money you are willing to spend you'd be better off contacting a BladeForum's maker and seeing what your options are. But as JB Monkey said, if you're willing to throw down that kind of money on a wall hanger... it's your choice and money.

I am curious to see it though. Are you able to post a pic?

Just don't do it. Save yourself from the questionable pakimascus steel and unknown heat treatment.

I'm going to be the contrarian voice here and say, for 250.00, it isn't that big of a gamble. Can you get in touch with someone who has handled his work before? Keep in mind that some of these guys are actually good smiths who have been at it for a long time. May I ask how you got in contact with this guy?

That said, 250.00 would go a long way to getting something from a maker here, but it won't be damascus. Honestly, if your budget is 250.00 and you want a damascus sword, Pakistani is really the only way it's gonna happen.

I've been told there are some good Smith's in Pakistan, but this is an already made sword that this person may not have actually made themselves.
It just may be something that can be purchased on eBay, or in a sword shop at the mall.

I would stay away, because it's not being produced for you and it's probably your typical flea market type junk.

Yeah not a great sword. Do want it just for display or to actually swing around and save maidens from horseback?

After seeing the picture and looking at "Messer Palast"s facebook page I would say its very unlikely that you'd be getting anything actually made to spec. Stay away. You can find very similar objects for 100.00-ish. It's a damscus wallhanger.

Not that there's anything wrong with wallhangers as long as they're used as such...
