Questions About Screws, and Pins

There seems to be a number of different techniques for fastening scales to blades. I have some blank handle material and some blind screws that I picked up at Blade, and I have a pretty good idea of how it all comes together. The question is, where can I get some plain old screws that would allow me to take handles on and off? A production knife with this scheme would be the Al Mar SERE Operator. Also, there is a very nice custom in this very forum that used colored screws.

While I am not dying to know the proccess for these colored screws, I would like to know where I can get plain old black torx screws to use in this fashion. Perhaps I am just term-challenged, and am not looking for the right words.

Also, could some one tell me where to find a tutorial on using pins? I see also of blade blanks set up for pins.

Thanks a bunch folks.

1. Knife-makers supply. Try http://www.texasknife.com/store/s-pages/TKS_MainframeStore.htm?TKS_FolderHardware1.htm~smain
or http://www.knifekits.com/store/s-pages/kk_store_1mainframe.htm?kk_products_parts_main.htm~smain.

2. Home Depot may very well have what you're looking for, or a decent hardware store with those hundreds of fastener drawers, there are probably torx in there somewhere.

If neither of these work out, try Googling it, or paintball stores might have some...lots of markers use torx screws.

Good luck

The basic method is to install tubular studs in the tang (handle part of the blade blank)which is tapped. The handle screws screw into them.It takes a bit of fitting to get the scales (handle pieces) right, but is a pretty neat system. If the tang is thick enough, you can tap it directly. The screws will meet in the middle,so this method requires a thick tang and precise screw length.
You can find threaded tubing in small tap sizes at model aircraft and railroading suppliers to make the studs.Torx screws from any knife supplier -Texas,K&G,Koval,etc.

Smallparts.com have lots of torx screws mainly in stainless or plated.

All you need to hold a handle scale in place is 1/16" of thread or in smaller size screws a length of thread equal to the screw diameter.
