Out of all the belt Grinders I've seen, I like the kmg probably the most as far as Aesthetics. Ease of tilt and adjustment is nice. I really should just buy one and I probably will but right now I have a bunch of steel and little excess cash so I'm going to make something pretty close in the 3x90 sort.

I think the tracking wheel turned out pretty nice, but really need to find a solution with the main body, that holds the motor and tool arms. I have 5/16 plate but not sure if that's thick enough to bolt the motor to without some type of vibration or chatter. I do have some 1" plate i could use as the body.

anyonr know what they use for main body steel plate? Looks like 1/4 from the pictures. Base looks like 1/2"

I’m 95% sure it’s all 1/2” but I’ll have to double check mine this evening.

The housemade is all 1/4 plate and I've never heard anyone complain about them. 1/2 honestly sounds a bit ridiculous. That's like structural steel for heavy equipment or quarry processing equipment. That seems like over-over kill. Maybe just the base plate 3/8 could be justified but that's still insane to me. That thing will weigh 250lbs

Edit: I could have sworn it was 1/4 just went to the website and the plate and mount is 3/8

I didn’t get home last night until after 7 and forgot about it completely. I’ll check it tonight but I’m positive it’s 1/2”. It’s got screws holding it together so it’s drilled and tapped into the edges of the plate.

Also, keep in mind that if you’re welding it together 5/16” could be a bit harder to keep square as thinner material will be more prone to warp. If you’re going to use it you might want to use 1” for the base plate to add some mass. Mass and stiffness will help reduce vibration.
