Master Ultra Giant

I think this knife looks neat. I am kinda playing with the thought of buying a new knife, and my surfing sort of drifted along in to finding this knife.

My questions are: Is this a good knife considering the pretty cheap price? Is it something that's gonna break the minute I open the box? Is this a good survival knife?

I was wondering if any of you have any experiences with this knife.

I have no experience with that knife, but I've found a good rule of thumb has always been "you get what you pay for", at least up to a certain point. At $16, the steel and the heat treat cannot be very good. At the lower end of the price spectrum there are good knives to be had from well-known makers like Buck, Becker, Cold Steel (Carbon V models), SOG, Ka-Bar, etc. They will still be considerably more than $16 but they will serve you for a long time if they're not abused.

It would be little more than a cheap show piece, I'm sure it'd be ok for cutting very soft targets. As for being a survival knife, not at all. In fact I'm certain it would eventually cause someone injury if used for anything medium duty or higher. It would break fairly easily. Look into cold steel, the Bushman line is made of carbon V, and under $20. Very reliable, very tough. Cheap knives that have a very slim chance of snapping on you.

I have used a few knives of that class in the woods, what you have to watch for are two main problem areas :

-handle breaking due to partial stick tang

-edge can be very weak due to soft steel

The steel is usually really soft and can be filed readily and is very easy to make a large dent/ripple on small diameter hardwoods, or knots.

That one even has a shallow hollow grind which is problematic even on decent steels, the handle looks decent though.

For that price I would get a small machete from Martindale or Barteaux.

Everything that Cliff said.

440steel usually means 440A, which is decently tough steel, though not greeat for edge holding, particularly since the price is $16. 440A can be made to far better performance levels than what most manufactureres who offer 440A blade do, but it'll cost you more than a $16 price tag, I suspect ! The ad in your link said it was full tang, so there should be more steel in the handle- blade junction than an iffy partial tang (usually very flimsy on cheap factory made knives).

If looks are anything, then this is a sort-of better looking piece than a Cold Steel Bushman, and it is stainless, if you must have that feature. Alternatively, is it within your budget to buy this $16 knife and get something else as well ? Jason.

It's not going to break the minute you open the box. For the price of a large pizza I really don't see where you have much to lose. That's one of the knives used in the "Lost" tv show.
