Questions About the MT SOCOM Elite

I'm thinking about saving up again for a top-end production folder. The Microtech SOCOM Elite (manual) is at the top of my list right now (followed closely by an Al Mar SERE 2000). However, I have a few questions regarding the SOCOM I'm hoping you can help me with.

* First, and most importantly, is it worth the price?

* Second, I have somewhat small hands and normally carry a Spyderco Delica. Are there any other small-handed SOCOM carriers out there that can comment on how well, or poorly, this knife works for you.

* Lastly, how does this knife carry in the front-right pocket of a pair of jeans? It seems like a rather large (though lightweight) knife from it's specs and I'm curious if it carries well.

I appreciate any comments you can offer.

I've got one of the original SOCOMs and two SOCOM elites and like them a lot. The SOCOM elites are some of the highest quality production knives made. Great lockup (with a massive lock bar!), nestles nicely in the hand and large enough for practically anything you'd ever want to use a folder for. Comes with a superb edge to boot.

But as to whether they are worth the money is a very personal and subjective thing. I've got some knives costing twice as much as the SOCOM elites which I don't enjoy using as much. Personally, I think they are worth the money, but you'd best try one for yourself first.

They are pretty large folders and for me, a smaller 3" folder carries much easier. But then, this is just me - some people I know have no trouble having it clipped to their pockets. When I carry one of my SOCOM elites, I use a horizontal pouch sheath at my belt.

Well, thought I would offer my .02 worth. I have in the past few months purchased several mini socoms, an Elite Socom, LCC MA, BM 730, and a Al Mar 2000. Got into this new hobby in a big way.

The Elite is the lightest and best in my very small hands. It is worth the money IMHO. ( I paid 170) The largest and lightest knife of the bunch (except of course for the mini.) Great design. Strong lockup. If I had to use one only it would be the Elite Socom. Use two I would carry the mini as second. The others are good knives too, however the MT Elite just fits me. One problem...it is not sheeple friendly, esp with a black blade. Also 4.09" long.

Good luck, Wade

I carry am M/A Socom Elite. As stated above it is a tough, light weight, beautifully engineered and executed design. It cuts like crazy and stays sharp. I carry mine in the front right side waistband of jeans, dockers, or slacks, whatever I'm wearing. You cannot go wrong with this knife. It's the sort of tool which will last you a lifetime. Jack

JMB- are you in the Twin Cities? If so- RFG Safe and Knife carries MT products, I believe. You could then check one out in person. Hope this helps.

You would be advised, if you are planning a trip to "Safe and Knife", to call ahead. Even though they are a MT dealer, their selection is a little on the light side right now. I am in there at least 2-3 times a week and late last week they only had one LCC and a couple of Vectors in the display case. MT makes those knives in the late spring each year, so consequently, dealers like "Safe and Knife" are limited to what is available at the factory. There is a huge weapons collectors show this weekend at the St. Paul River Center. That would be a good source for a Socom Elite. And if that doesn't pan out, drop me a line. I can get you one.

Barry H
