Questions about torching locks

Do you guys torch the lock before or after you seat the detent ball?

Will the heat affect the 440c stainless ball detent? My guess is it will lower the hardness of the ball.

better do it before....did one after and the ball got all red...not a good sign.....i get it cherry red for about 1/4"...but i dont know if im supposed to quench it or let it air cool....any one know the answer??
