Questions aboutr Kershaw Chive again ...

I posted a while back that I'm considering a new glossy black Ken Onion Chive from Kershaw.

My friend let me borrow a regular Kershaw Chive he bought about 18 months ago.

Once thing that concerns me is the little lock that prevents the knife mechanism from opening inadvertently. It's a little sliding piece, but the part that stops the blade seems like cheap plastic and is pretty worn on his knife.

Did I explain what I'm referring to well? has this part been updated at all? Am I being too concerned about it?

Thanks very much!

Chris

I have a Scallion , Chive's bigger brother, and it to has a safety.
I agree with you that it looks a little weak and it will get beat up over time especially if you close the blade onto the safety when it is 'on'.
However they stand up to the beating and I have never had a problem yet.

You will like Kershaws. Personally I find the Chive just a little small for my hand , but thats just me.
I love my Scallion and will get a Leek soon.

The reason it is plastic, or at least why I would want it to be plastic, is that it is softer than the steel. Imagine if the blade does open accidently and hits the stop, and that stop was made out of steel. That would damage the blade, we wouldn't want that happening.

As far as it getting beat up, well I don't know. I took mine off my Chive as it seemed to be more of a pain than it was worth.

i don't know if it's been updated, but i wouldn't be ultra- concerned with that locking mechanism. it's not required to withstand too much pressure, so it doesn't have to be made out of something super strong. i have a leek, and i just checked mine. pretty sure it's plastic, never had a problem.

I got a rainbow chive, cool little knife. So far so good as far as the safety lock. The glossy black chive looks sharp (no pun intended). I wonder how scratch resistent it is though. I went with the rainbow because it's supposed to be more scratch resistent. I have a Chive and a Random Leek and I love how they are constructed and put together.

Wade,
There seem to be 2 models of black chive. One is BC1 (Boron Carbide/ a ceramic), the other is titanium nitride. The BC is the shinier. I think the coatings are only "micron thick." My research shows both these materials to be super-hard. Like RC-100 or something. Some reviews say the BC1 is darn near unscratchable.
