I have a few questions. I was reading on their website, about the blades. I noticed they had premium stainless steel blades and the SV30 Premium. I was wondering if those would be the same? I was also wondering what peoples thoughts were on the best blade for the money? I was wondering if someone can give me their insight on the nitrous and spring assist? I would like to spend about 150 to 200 for my first knife and was wondering what peoples thoughts are.

By premium I'd assume its m390 and it is a great steel. Benchmade does a good job on all their heat treats so the steel you want will be uo to you. I personally prefer the D2 over s30v and 154cm. D2 is not considered stainless, although it is super close to being so, and I have never had any problems with corrosion and such. Any one (154cm, d2, s30v) will serve you great. M390 will be the best tho.

By premium I'd assume its m390 and it is a great steel.

This isn't accurate. Bm lists S30v as well as 440c as "premium stainless steel", and things like the 9cb hook cutter are just "premium stainless steel" with actual composition unlisted, which I guarantee aren't M390 (because if it was, they'd advertise it as m390).

If it doesn't have a steel type listed, it isn't a premium steel in the s30v-and-above sense.

If you give the knife you're looking at, someone may be able to tell you.

What is the different between the Nitrous assist and spring assist. I'm aware that you have to move it more for the nitrous to kick in, but isn't it the same thing theoretically?

I was looking at this one.
Benchmade 810-1401 Contego™ OSBORNE DESIGN

Knifeworks Exclusive

AXIS® locking mechanism

Reverse tanto blade with ambidextrous thumb-stud openers

M390 steel blade (60-62HRC)
Milled blue/black G10 handle scales with stainless steel backspacer, full liners, and reversible deep carry tip-up pocket clip

and

Benchmade Volli

The newest AXIS-Assist knife. New look, same fortitude.

AXIS®-Assist locking mechanism
Drop-point blade with ambidextrous dual thumb-stud opener
Black Coated S30V stainless steel blade (58-60HRC)
Black contoured and textured G10 handle
Stainless steel liners with reversible split-arrow clip

With the Nitrous assist the spring action is created by using cutouts in the liners with a swing arm and roller. The two models above are both based on the Axis design; the Contego is manual and the Volli is assisted by adding a coil spring. I have small hands and the Volli is a better fit - but that's personal preference.

Strength? Both steels have superb tensile strength due to their fine grained structure; I think many, myself included, prefer M390 over S30V. Again that's my opine. While there are exclusive limited runs of the Contego, the regular production model is still available in M4.

I would get the m390 contego hands down over the volli. The contego is a stout knife that is easily carried, and with one in m4 or m390 you just can't lose when picking which one to get.

I went and ahead and purchased the contego. Who would I contact about getting different clips. I heard benchmade sends them out.
