Questions concerning Shapton Pro Stones.

I recently got some Shapton Pro stones because I'd like to try sharpening on waterstones. I have two questions I tried to do searches for and can't seem to find the answers for.

1. Is a 140 grit Atoma good for lapping all the following Shapton Pro stones: 1k, 5k, 8k, 15k? I thought I read someone higher grits need a finer lapping stone, but can't seem to find the thread here.

2. Concerning the above listed stones, is there too large of a grit jump between them? Using a 1k then going straight to 5k etc?

1) The 140 will be fine , if you pickl up finer Atomas down the line I would use them on your finer stones. Not a necessity though.

2) I would add at least the pro 1500 in there. The Pro 1k is more like an 800 or so. Making 1k - 5k a bit of a big jump. You could also get the 2k. The 1500 is an excellent stone that should be in every sharpeners collection imo.

If your edges and scratch patterns aren't perfect , then you wont see much of a difference going from the 5k - 8k , and from the 8k - 15.

The 1k to 5k is fine if you are stopping at 5k. If you are trying to mirror polish the edge then beyond 5k you will notice deep scratches as the polish increases making all imperfections stand out like a sort thumb.

I would recommend the Pro 2k to go with your selection of stones. The 1500 is a nice stone but clogs on stainless and does not span the gap to 5k nearly as well as the 2k.
