Did my first etch this evening. My custom stencils from TUS aren't here yet, but I had this one for ATS-34 from Tracy Mickley, so when my personalizer showed up this evening I had to give it a go.

I think it turned out ok, and I owe it in part to Tom Krein who gave some good advice on getting a nice clear, deep, and dark mark. Tom mentioned that many people tend not to etch deep enough or dark enough, possibly because they are worried about burn, too much darkening, etc. He told me to etch good and deep and do plenty of marking and not to worry about the dark haze that spreads out from the mark, just go back to my final finishing grit and clean it up, so I gave it a shot.

I used the standard personalizer and did 7 passes at 10 seconds each on the "etch" setting. Then I switched to the "mark" setting and did 6 passes at 3-4 seconds each. Seems to have worked alright. I'll have to fiddle with it but I think I'm in the ballpark. Thanks Tom:thumbup:

A couple of questions: Are the etching pads a one use and throw away item, or can you use them more than once? Also, the etcher comes with two different electrolytes, one for aluminum etc, and one for carbides etc, but they both say they work on stainless. Is one better than the other for stainless steels like the CPM varieties, or 154CM, ATS-34 and the like or are they both adequate?

Looks fine! They make etchant for primarily for stainless as well.

Thanks for the response Michael:thumbup: I'll check with some of the suppliers to see about getting one for primarily stainless since that's all I'm using at the moment.

What about pads? Can they be used more than once? Is there something more economical out there that works just as well that I could pick up at the local drugstore? Or is it important to only use pads made specifically for the etcher?

I reuse the pad many times. It finally get stiff and makes a crummy etch.If i remember to rinse them out each time they last a long time.I dont know if there is any nonspecific pad material.

You can buy a half yard of felt at the fabric section of wallyworld and have pads for life.Iuse mine till they get stiff.

Well, my stencil from TUS arrived this afternoon, but I wasn't as fortunate as I was with my first try. The first time I tried it I couldn't get a mark at all, just the very top corner of the J. I felt like I wasn't getting any reaction with the metal at all, thought maybe it was the ground, had the knife sitting on a terry towel on my workbench, so I got rid of the towel, made sure that only the metal of the aligator clip was touching the workpiece and tried again. Got a good deep etch, but couldn't get the mark in as solid as I did with the ats34 etch last night. When I went to clean it up after I was done I rubbed the black right out. Still looks ok but not as dark as I would have liked. I could go over it again, but don't want to get the image any fuzzier, so this one will stay.

Get some electrolyte from TUS as well, just tell them your primary steel.

I use EX-9B lately on CPM154 and D2, and have had dealer sites list my knives as "laser marked" by mistake!

Their stuff is great, hell, I even had them send me some of their felt, It works great too.
