I am trying to decide between the NG Vietnam tomahawk and the NG tomahawk. For a utility/personal defense tool, which would be better to buy first? I am wanting to add one for my outdoor activities as well as to my persoanl defense battery.

Thanks in advance.

I have the first generation vietnam and Rogers Ranger Spike hawk. If it was me, I would buy the NG Vietnam first. Its lighter, faster, and a easy carry. I think speed makes it a the better CQB weapon for the average guy, but its a tough choice. I think you need both sooner or later. But weight and size wise, I think you will carry the vietnam hawk more. Its just so read to go.

Thanks, Mike, the Vietnam hawk looks quicker from all of the pics that I ahve seen. But, the NG spike hawk looks sweet. I probably will have to have both:D

I have played with both the Vietnam Tac and the NG Ranger. I like the Ng Ranger a bit better - jeez, its not THAT heavy! You wimps :D I ordered an NG of my own in December and its getting here in a week or so. I ordered my Vietnam tac a couple weeks ago and it goes out Monday. I had to have both after I tried them - they both are awesome and supreme quality. Either would do whatever you need! NG Ranger is just my personal choice. Like Andy said, its the finest tomahawk they make. I Also have an RR Spike coming to me within days. That's another great hawk.

The next generation ranger has got to be the best tomahawk made! The vietnam tac hawk is also a great hawk, but the ranger has the handle guarantee. I've been told that you would have to be really hard on the vietnam to break the handle-head junction. I would have to agree that buying both is what I and as you've read most people on the forum have done. Don't forget about the T3. That will come into the picture soon.

They also make a training hawk (vietnam style) which is a good idea if you have friends or wives that aren't really understanding enough to see that "it's sharp and made to cut really well". It just might save you a trip to the hospital for stiches. Oh I know stiches may sound cool, but from a tomahawk, make sure your not the one in need of medical attention!

What ever hawk you do buy, make sure it's from ATC. Anything else is a waste of time.

RunningBear, thanks for the reply. I only plan on getting a tomahawk from ATC, not anybody else. I have owned a few hawks from CS, and they are not what I thought they would be cracked up to be.

I know what you mean. I have their version of the vietnam tomahawk. It's unbalanced, the handle is painted, which makes it slick and hard to hold on to. I don't feel like I have control. The hawk head they made alot heavier so they can film it hitting a block wall trying to make it look like one bad tomahawk. When I got my first ATC vietnam hawk I looked at the cs hawk and said what a peace of crap. The only thing it's good for is a paper weight.

American tomahawk makes hawks that are ready for action. They handle like they should. I'm a carpenter, and when I pick up my vietnam hawk it's balanced just like my hammer. It's a hawk that says "what are you waiting for, use me!" I can't say enough good things about ATC. CS makes alot of hawks and they should be thrown right in the trash!

As does Mike, I too have a first generation VN hawk, and a spiked Ranger hawk. Quite a toss-up as to which to get first (and yeah, you ARE going to have to get both! While in no way do I find the Ranger unwieldy, the VN is very quick in the hand

I just got my back-ordered nylon sheath for my VN, and guess what came with it? A VN Tac hawk! Reeally cool hawk. I wasn't aware of this one (okay...I'm new here) ; ROUND knurled handle, and a special head attachment so that you can unscrew the head and replace the handle if needed.

Justin said it was sent out by mistake, and for me to send it back, but I think I'll just keep it and pay him for it.:D And I thought he sent it out of the goodness of his heart! ;)

No offense to the RR Spike owners out there, but the NG Ranger is a bit different from the original RR Spike. The head is smaller and of a different shape, less weight. The handle also changes it dramatically. The Original RR Spike is a different hawk from the NG Ranger. The NG Ranger is the best and the VN Tac is not too far behind. Both kick ass. Buy The NG AND the VN Tac. You won't regret it.
