Greetings:
I am planning to remove the red sides from a Swiss Army Knife and install some Mesquite wood in its place. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By-the-way, this is a great forum.

Welcome to the forums.
That should make the knife look great. I never was a fan of those red plastic scales.
You need to make sure of a few things before you start. Are their any pins holding the handle material to the liners? Are their liners on both sides of the knife? And do any of the pivot pins go through the scales.
If their are no pins going through the scales, and their are liners on both sides of the knife it shouldn't be to difficult.
Just take the plastic off however you can without ruining the liners. You may want to trace the shape of the handle before you take the plastic off in case it doesn't come off in one peice. That way you have a rough pattern for your wood. Then make sure you scuff the liners up with some medium grit sandpaper and epoxy the wood on. Finish shaping the scales however you want, and seal them somehow. Ther are alot of things you can use to seal the wood, just make sure you get a hard finish that will resist wear and water.
Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions. I'm sure someone here can help you out.

Hey Guys..
You know I was just talking to a knifemaker friend of mine a few weeks ago about this very same thing....

We even talked about cutting out,,or having made the emblem and inlaying it into the scales...

I wasn't thinking wood though,,but more like some OD Micarta or G10.. That with the Swiss emblem,,and it work look Right On!!!

Please let us know how easily the scales come off,,and some pictures.....

ttyle Eric....

I replaced the scales on my SAK with red linen micarta. Just drop the thing in boiling water and the scales will be off in no time. Then just drill through the divots in the old handle and lay against the material you will use to rehandle. Trace the pattern and mark the divots onto the new material. Cut out the new scales, countersink the divots, epoxy to the knife and finish as you desire. Simple really.

Greetings Again:

Thanks for the info. I may take a while to get going and finish this project, but I will keep this forum posted.

I have rehandled 1 SAK with wood handle. I dont remember if it was Victorionox or Wegner. But one of these brands are very open in the frame with big holes in the liner into the blades and the other not. If you find it to be the open one be real carefull not to get epoxy down the holes since you will end up with a nice paperweight insteed of a knife.

I have taken both brands apart and both handles were click on types. A knifeblade in between the handle and liner should take it right of.
Besides that I agree on what has been said above.

I bet if you looked around a bit you could find nice enameled tie tac of that SAK Logo, that would be a nice inlay for new scales.
