Questions from a "newbee" on the BM730S...

Just ordered my first "serious knife" from GPKnives. Its a BM730S, and should be here no later than tomorrow! Looking forward to it!

As this is my first "serious knife", I'm looking for pointers on maintaining the edge on the blade (sharpening). What I'd like is something that is compact/portable to take hunting/camping with me. I really no nothing about the various types of sharpeners (i.e. "rods" -vs- "stones") and that sort of stuff.

I've only used the "flat stone" to sharpen my old Buck knife. Currently I use one of the "carbide hand sharpeners" to sharpen my filet knife and Momma's kitchen cutlery. That tool seems like it cuts awat to much material to use on a high-dollar type knife like the BM 730S??

Are there certain techniques to sharpen that 50-50 plain/serrated blade??

Mine is the 154CM version (non-pp ATS-34). Do's and dont's for this blade??

I don't mind spending cash for the good stuff, but I like the K.I.S.S. concept when it comes to this. Compact and portable is a big factor (i.e. no 50lb 110v "bench grinders"!).

Thanks in advance for the pointers!

Five-O Welcome to BladeForums! For some odd reason, I thought I'd find you were from Hawaii, not Alaska.

Check out Joe Talmadges Sharpening FAQs in the FAQs portion of BladeForums. Also search the words 'sharpening' and 'strop' in the general forum. These topics come up All the time. Do a little homework and save everyone some time typing. You'll learn more that way also.

Try the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Nice little tool.

Welcome Five-O! You can't go wrong with a Spyderco 204 sharpener. It's the benchmake in "V" style ceramic sharpeners. For real portability tri a Gatco Tri-Seps, basically a small section on triangular ceramic rod. The 204 is your best bet though because it is the best tool for sharpening serrations. Hope this helps.

Paracelsus,
You read my mind! I just came back to add to my post that any "links" or web pages on sharpening would be helpfull too. Thanks!

Johan,
Thanks for the advice. I'll look into these tools. Do you have any links to pictures or specifics on these??

By-the-way.....Thanks for the "warm welcome" to BladeForums! I've been ghosting for awhile (doing research for my new folder!). Seems like a good bunch of folks here, and the format is alot like my other favorite web-site GlockTalk.com. I also like to spend time at AR-15.com, but sometimes those threads get too "intense" (a kind term) for me!

Five-0 - welcome to the forums! Aside from the sharpening tips, I'd like to recommend the Sentry Solutions knife care products. Their Tuf-Cloth is as improtant a knife accessory as a good sharpener is IMO. TC will help clean the blade as well as prevent rust from forming. Tuf-Glide is a pivot lube that comes in a 1/2 ounce bottle with a precision applicator. Put a few drops in the pivot area of your knife and cycle the blade. TG offers the same corrosion protection as Tuf-Cloth in the hard-to-reach areas. Find out more about them by visiting http://www.sentrysolutions.com . Hope this helps!

Here's another hot tip:

When you want to see pictures of knives and related accessories, you can generally find them at www.knifecenter.com

Welcome to the forums, Five O.

For a sharpening system, I'd recommend the Lansky sharpening system. It is available in either a 4 or 6 stone pack, in normal stone or diamond coated. Great for keeping a consistant angle!

I've also heard great things about the sharpmaker, so I'm sure you can't go wrong with that. Actually, I might be picking one up myself sometime soon.

Dexter, I'm with ya on the Sentry Solutions prodcts. My local LE supply shop carries those products and I've been "eyeball'in" them ever since I seen an add for them in Tactical Knives. As soon as my BM730S gets here I'll be picking some up!

Troops, Thanks for the tips!
