As I understood Mike Turber's post, the planned blade size is 3.75". He may change this to 3.95" shortly before production. The handle will apparently allow a 3.95" blade. Most U.S.A. blade laws allow up to a 4" blade, so that is one reason the blade will be no longer than that for the time being. Another reason for the under 4" length is to make it easier to carry on the belt or around one's neck. Big folders, though interesting, can be awkward to carry (and flip). Chuck Gollnick has suggested that way off in the future Microtech could produce a longer/bigger or even a smaller balisong, but that would certainly be at least one year away and probably more. It would also be dependent upon the success of the Tachyon. I'm with Chuck on this one; just get model one to me.
Combat, camping, survival, is the blade big enough? There is much discussion of blade size going on in this forum right now (see 5" posts). No knife can be all things to all people (to paraphrase someone). My choice for the uses you describe would not be a balisong, but probably a cord wrapped, skeleton handled, fixed blade of high carbon steel. Still, I eagerly await my Tachyon, which, although capable in an emergency of the tasks you mention, is to me a collector's and/or "flipper's" knife. That it is being made by Microtech also "sweetens the pot" for us MT collectors.
