Questions on a Kershaw Scallion

Okay, this is my first post on BF, I've lurked for a while but I really like it here and decided to register and I have no regrets. Okay, so a few months ago I was in an antique shop and picked up a Kershaw knife for cheap. The speedsafe (not sure if this is proper nomenclature) mechanism did not work but I sent the knife to Kershaw and in a few weeks I got the knife back in the mail in working order. At first I did not know the model of knife because there are no markings on the blade whatsoever, it is black coated and the handles/scales are a black plastic type that say Kershaw, Ken Onion, USA. Other Scallions that I researched online seemed to have a different handle material and the blades were marked and many had three holes along the top. So I wanted to dip into the well of knowledge here and figure out what these handles are made of, maybe nylon. What type of steel is used? 420 High Carbon maybe? and what the age of this knife most likely is as well as anything else anyone could tell me about it. Thank you in advance!

I have pictures on my computer but im not sure how to post them, I will when i figure it out.

Welcome to the forums! The model is 1620BLK, the steel is 420HC, the coating on the blade is DCL (diamond like carbon) the handles are glass filled nylon, you have the original model of the scallion, the holes in the blade where a later addition to the knife (I have no idea when they made the change)

Niner beat me to it! there were/ are 2 versions of the handles , T6 anodized aluminum comes in many colors and the glass filled nylons that came in black and yellow. The holes were started somewhere around 2010ish from what I remember. As for age, before you sent it in, was there a date stamp on the ricasso near the flipper? if so then whatever the date was, if not sometime after may 2009 if I remember correctly.

Thanks to both of you, that was fast and answered all of my questions. I've carried the knife around once in while when I want something smaller than my manix or native and I wanted to know a little more about it. The handles on mine are fairly slick, is this the way the knife came or is this from wear most likely? There are no markings on the knife nor were there, which i found a little odd but it must just mean the knife is made after May 2009. When looking at the knife the liner seems to be far over where it connects to the blade, is this to be of concern or is this normal? If the knife is "worn out" is there anything I can do about it? The blade still has a lot of life in it but i do realize this never was a high end knife. Thanks Again

I've carried the knife around once in while when I want something smaller than my manix or native and I wanted to know a little more about it. The handles on mine are fairly slick, is this the way the knife came or is this from wear most likely? yes the nylon handled version is a little slick. There are no markings on the knife nor were there, which i found a little odd but it must just mean the knife is made after May 2009. not exactly, I'm fairly sure that even the pre 2009 models had the markings "1620BLK KAI petented MAD IN USA" on the clip side of the knife and the date of manufacture on the flipper, I could be wrong though. When looking at the knife the liner seems to be far over where it connects to the blade, is this to be of concern or is this normal? If the knife is "worn out" is there anything I can do about it? The blade still has a lot of life in it but i do realize this never was a high end knife. no it actually makes it safer, the term would be "late" lock up, the farther the liner gose across the tang (the portion of the blade that makes contact with the liner) the "later" the lock up. Thanks Again

this is the knife correct?

It should have some grip. I held a very beat up and used up one once at a fleamarket and it still had a little grip in it. The handles are a touch thicker than the aluminum ones too. As for the lockbar, is there play up or down? If so then contact kershaw again by phone preferably and tell them what's up. They will more than likely have you send it in and take care of whatever it needs.

9blades - Yes that is the knife in question

juju- there isnt much play in it, but there is some, I will give kershaw a call and see what is up

Thank you for the help
