I recently got a Sharpmaker but am having trouble getting it clean using the procedures Sal mentions in the video.

Anybody have any tricks they use to get theirs clean? Or don't they come completely clean when scrubbing them with Coment and a scouring pad?

Comet cleaner and a sponge.

Been cleaning mine for over a decade and it works for me, little time involved as well so I can get back t sharpening.

I usually just scrub with dish detergent and a scrubber sponge until they're sort-of clean.

If I want them 99% pristine, I'll soak in vinegar for a few days.

Scouring powder works great for me. A rubber (eraser, to be more specific) ;) also does the trick (especially outdoors).

An eraser works great on ALL ceramic hones. It's quick & not very messy. When I take mine camping, the eraser is in the carrying case. Remember that ceramics "load" up with steel very fast so it's important to clean em often for best results.

Barkeeper's Friend and a sponge (Scotch Brite pads work best) on the ceramic stones and for cleaning the diamonds stones, I am not sure.

Thanks you guys! I hadn't heard of the pencil eraser trick before. I am most certainly going to try this...I get tired of scrubbing them under hot water and soap although this works great.

mrd74,

Yes, you can put them in the dishwasher (in fact I think Sal even says this in the instructional video) but it doesn't take everything off of the stones, I've tried it. They seem to require some physical scrubbing to dislodge the particles.

Best thing I found is Comet and a scotch brite pad.Bar keeper friend would work with a abrasive pad but not do a good job by its self,it is a non abrasive cleaner.Be sure the cleaner you use is abrasive,if it says it will not scratch a surface then it will not do a real good job.
