Questions on Patinas

In trying to educate myself on traditional knives and steels, I find myself a bit unclear on the subject of a patina on the knife blade. Recently I traded a few of my modern knives for traditionals, which came to me in mostly perfect condition (i.e., no patina). I decided to do a couple forced patinas, wth mixed results. I have also heard of allowing that to occur naturally--so what are the pros and cons of each method?

Thanks in advance, great subforum.

Welcome!

This first (and still current) thread contains some great information that will hopefully answer some of your questions:

Patina Clarification

If not, feel free to chime in there. :)

How-to (blackest of black!):

ed. to add:
I (re)found those posts by using the subforum-specific search function found at the upper right of the list of threads in Traditional (not the whole-site search field found in the menu bar on every page).

There are more results, but the threads I've directly linked to above seemed the most promising. :)

Thanks for the links and the search lesson Pertinux--that's a big help. That thread clarified things quite a bit.
