I have been reading that the Powerlock has the ability to customize the tool configuration. I'm going to order one up but want some clarification first.

My questions would be...

Where do you get the different tools from? I've not seen anything on SOG's site. Are there tools to choose from outside of what comes standard with the tool?

If you chose to remove a tool all together are there spacers available?

All of my other tools are very specific about how the tools are organized (e.g. long blades on the edge to allow clearance for the pliars), so you would be limited on how you could organize them, or is that not the case on the SOG?

I'm just a little confused about the whole feature, definitely sounds cool though.

Please feel free to share any information you may have about this feature.

Thanks!

PS: Is there a plain edge version of the knife blade available? ;)

I was going to answer your question, but when I noticed that you have quite a few question(s), so I'll defer to Ron to answer for you.

(BTW...I LOVE my PowerLock. :)).

Glockman, answer all that you can, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.

I think the concept of user changeable blades is very cool, I'm buying a Powerlock regardless, but I'm trying to get ideas on the purpose of the feature.

Thanks!

I wonder what parts not in the Powerlock are available.
I'm a bit tempted to swap a few of the stuff that I don't use often for something more useful. I tend to use the PowerLock for computers and stuff.

Hey Everyone,

Sorry for the delay in posting a response to you guys. I've got a couple things goin' 'gainst me here. First, my work schedule has me going way overboard at about 70 hours a week (my family has forgotten what I look like). Second, I'm sick. I have a dang cold. I think I got it from Spark when he sneezed on me over in the General Forum about a week ago. The only reason I'm whining about this here is ...

... that while on cold medicine last night (I’ve been on cold medicine for a week!), I wrote a fairly detailed response to this thread. I don't know where the hell it is now. What I do know is that I fell asleep at my keyboard last night in my office at home. I know the post was complete on my monitor, or almost done, but I just must have forgot to press "submit reply" and something stupid happened. It’s gone. All that work. :( Oh, well ...

Now for the ”official” SOG response! :)
  • Different tools/components: For the most part, our Consumer Services Department (they can be reached by calling 888.SOG.BEST or 425.771.6230, Option 1) is the only source for SOG accessories. (With very, very few exceptions, I know of very few companies that carry anything more than “product.”)
  • For the most part, the PowerLock comes fully loaded. Since the PowerLock has come in a few different configurations over the years, there is no easy answer to “What’s the options?” To offer a competent answer this question, one should have their PowerLock in-hand and get SOG’s Consumer Services personnel on the phone.
  • Removing tools: If one chooses to remove a tool/component, a spacer/washer is required to fill void. These are very standard washers and can be found at any local hardware store (or as a courtesy, SOG can provide them).
  • Order: The order of the tool/component is very important to the successful overall operation of the tool. The hexbolt construction does allow for the complete strip-down of the tool for cleaning, maintenance, repairs, and modifications...really giving it a TON of overall flexibility!
  • Blades: Available for our tools are both fully straight blades as well as fully serrated (Sheepsfoot style) blades.
I think this addressed all the questions asked. If I missed anything...I’ll blame it on my “cold.” Please ask more questions if you have any...and I’ll try to respond a little bit more quickly this time! :)

Thanks for the thoughtful response Ron, sorry it took so long for you to complete ;)

Don't feel bad though, I once fell asleep with my feet up on my desk for 9 hours, when I woke up I had to crawl for the nexthour because my legs were blue and I couldn't walk.... then there was the time I fell asleep on the toilet for almost 3 hours.... awe never mind you don't want to hear that one :D

Hope you feel better soon.

I will be ordering my Powerlock next week then calling you CS line for some blade options, especially a plain edge!

I knew you could count on Ron to give you the correct answer.

You are really going to like your PowerLock...It's a VERY impressive multi-tool, and IS the "best of the best"!

After you have played with it for awhile, you will also want to get a Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier (smaller & lighter), and then a CrossCut (it fits in the watch pocket of my Levi jeans, along with a Photon II).

Well, I'm thinking I may order both from the gitgo :)

I picked up the new Supertool 200 and the LM Pulse to check out their locks, never liked the old style of having to lift another tool to unlock the open one. They are nice but I'm kind of in a Multitool mood and want to do a nice side by side comparison of the 2 LM's, Swisstool and the 2 SOG's...
