don't mean to hijack, but two quick questions for those who know Spyderco info.

What is the blade length on the Starmate?

Also, I had heard that they were coming out with a new "version" of the Starmate this year. Is this correct?

Never been a huge Spyderco fan, but gotta say, beautiful knife.

I have had both ,still have the new version and I really like it,it is definitely more robust ,and is really well made, the only things I wish that would have been done was kept some of the original touches like the original. these are 2 things that I wish they would not have changed

Does not come with the medallion/shield on the handle like the original because of the pocket clip
Also doesn't have the large "Terzuola" etching on the side of the blade instead has the smaller logo ( btw one of the coolest logos in the knife world)

I'll be picking one up for several reasons:

  • Terzoula is my favorite custom maker. Year after year he retains a refined simplicity to his designs and the Starmate is no exception.
  • I don't consider the $180 street price "too much" - the build quality looks top-notch.
  • Overbuilt - check out the blade stock and standoffs. Thick liners. Original 3 screw 'around the pivot' clip design (well, almost).
  • I'm not tired of stainless liner locks and G-10, not yet at least. :)
The original version had more of that old-school Spyderco character....... nested liner, medallian, hollow ground 440V ()......... but you're not going to find a better Terzoula design on the market right now with this level of fit-and-finish at the price point.
