First off, what are peoples opinion on it? Looks like an interesting knife / tool for camping.

What exactly is the steel used by Case when it is listed as "Tru-Sharp Surgical Steel"? Sounds like a fancy way of saying crappy steel to me, but I could be wrong.

I don't own any Case knives, but they seem to be reletively well respectd as far as slip-joit traditional type knives go.

My local Gander Mt. has this knife for $50 which is cheaper than I have seen anywhere online. I don't know if it is pricing mistake or what, becasue usually all the knives there are priced at about 20% - 30% what I see priced at online places like NGK and the like.

I am going camping this weekend and it looked handy, and I could always use another knife. Also last camping trip I lost the knife and spoon to my flatware set, so I really should get something of this sort.

Is it worth a purchace?

I bought one to keep with me when I was an OTR truck driver. I found the spoon to be too small, the fork and knife worked fine though. I'm not sure what type of steel is used in the Hobo, I feel it's more of a collectible item than one I'd use everyday. You'd come out better getting a titanium spork for around $10.

That does sound like a good price, and the Hobo is pretty handy in your pack or BOB. But the impliments are small, very small. For less than ten bucks you can get a very useful titanium fork and knife set from Snowpeak, add a SAK Spartan with two knife blades, bottle opener, can opener and cokscrew and you are in business.

I requested one (Fathers Day Gift) to add to a collection of a certain series of Case knives with no intention of ever using it.It might be a viable asset to a BOB but as mentioned above,an SAK,Spork,Ti Chopstix, etc. make more sense to me.YMMV.tom.

That's entirely correct. Case knives with stainless blades are pretty to look at, but don't hold an edge worth a crap. I don't think I have seen anyone recommend a Case knife with a stainless blade for an every day user.

Case does make some knives with good carbon steel blades. The Case carbon steel is called "chrome vanadium". The problem is that their selection of knives with carbon steel blades is limited.

IMO, you'd be much better off getting something else to use for eating. It looks nice, but not all that functional.

I had an older one (gov't mover's liberated it years ago).

Recently replaced is with another one, without the spoon though. I didn't see a need for the spoon and it seemed to make it too big.
If you want a smaller package you may look for one without the spoon.

It's a nice knife to have for the cool factor at times. However, there are better options.

I think I have read about people getting sick from them, they would use it and not wash it well enought, then next time the use it... :barf:

From the time I was a kid, I've always had a predjudice against any pocketknife with a fork or spoon (probably this developed around the time my mom bought be a Pakistani "stag" handled "camper's" knife with 57 "tools," including fork and spook and corkscrew and fish scaler and scissors that wouldn't cut anything and ....). Too junky. That was one knife I wasn't sorry to lose.

Just toss an actual spoon in your pack.

i have one without the spoon and it is a "dandy"

Id say go for one without the spoon.

dont listen to underaged ":barf:" hes CrAzY!
