Questions on Viper MV-1

Hi all, I'm new to the forums but I have a question about my new family member. I've got a MV-1 , it's damn near perfect, the only flaw is just a little rub (not even a scratch ) where it looks like it was pulled from a pocket across a rivet in someone's jeans. that's pure speculation, don't know how it got there, but as I said, it's not even deep enough to be considered a scratch, just a rub.

Anyway, it's a 2000, How long did Ernie make these? It has Titanium Bolsters and micarta panels.

Also, would the later "skull" logo clip be appropriate for it or should I just leave it as it is?

I won't torture anyone with the story of it's adoption, lets just say that the guy I bought it from had no idea what he had and I had little more, I just new it had to be mine and he was very amenable. I now know after alot of time doing research just how lucky I was.

It now rotates duty with my Etzler War Pup ( what incredible damascus!!).

Thanks, Ward

Ward, welcome to Bladeforums! :D

If you're going to use the Viper, go ahead and put whatever clip you like on it. If you think you might want it as a collector, keep it as pristine as possible.

Great knife, however you got it!

Ernie's been making the Viper 1 since before it was called a Viper, which dates back at least to 1988 or so. It is a taticalized version of a Michael Walkerish design, and is one of his best classics. Great blade to handle ratio, very easy to carry in any attire, and a really functional design all contribute. Along with the CQC6, it is one of the most popular with professionals. Nice score.

Since the first post, it's almost always in my pocket or hand but I won't cut anything with it...I pull out one of the others for cutting...just love the Emerson too much....chisel grind PHENOMINAL edge, ...had a hard time identifying exactly which model it was, sent a e-mail to Mr. Emerson, I figured out what it was then, got an e-mail back from Mr. Emerson himself! To say that I was blown away to hear from him directly would be a severe understatement! I've been bragging to all my friends! Wonderful knife, great maker! I printed saved, printed a couple more times the e-mail from Mr. E.
Following is th ee-mail from Mr. E.

"Dear Ward,

The MV1 is the very first model of the hard/field use knives that I designed. The MV1’s were the first real tactical knives that I produced starting in 1989-1990 and I still make it. I have probably made around a hundred or so over the years. It is still one of my favorite models.

I hope you enjoy it.

My Best Regards,

Ernest R. Emerson"

Does anyone know what year he started using the skull logo clip, and in Black or, satin as shown on his site?

Thanks to all who responded.
