Questions re G10 finishing

I'm curious--how is it decided how G10 scales will be finished on each model? The Wegner & the old G10 Rookie are quite smooth & easy on the pockets but offer a solid grip.

The G10 Police & the Chinook, while well-designed knives, feel like 40-grit sandpaperby comparison. Was this intentional in design terms, or was this a cost-containment measure?

Also, is there any chance the Endura IIs and Delica IIs will be available in G10? I like the greater sturdiness of the all-steel construction vs. the FRN models, but they're hard to hold onto, & the handles always look grungy after I've handled them & never seem to come properly clean again.

Truth be told, the all-steel models are rather heavy in pocket carry for me, but then I *started* with a 1st generation Endura so I guess I got spoiled.

Any input welcomed & appreciated!

Hi Eda-koppo. When we first began using G10, the scales were sand or bead blasted to create the texture. Due to skill and equipment, finishes differed greatly among companies and even among models.

As technology developed the material for knife industry use, pre-textured G10 became available. This provided a consistant method of texturing the material as well as more "grip" (tough on pockets, but good for hard use control).

Now the material is to the stage that companies are learning how much "grip" to use, ways to laminate, make stronger, etc.

I'm sure you'll see many handle materials develop over the next 5 years. History in the making.

Thanks for the reply--glad to know more & more goodies are forthcoming as far as gripping surfaces!
