I have a Camillus 5684 Marine Combat knife. My knife has a 2" section of triple point type serrations on the edge near the guard and a 3.5" section of sawteeth on the spine similar to those on the Pilot Survival Knife.

My Questions:

- Why? Does anyone know why Camillus produced this configuration?

- Was it some sort of leftover Frankenstein concoction, or was it produced for someone?

- Does anyone else have a partially serrated sawtooth spine Camillus Marine Combat?

- Is this knife still out there in circulation? Is this configuration still available somewhere?

Thanks guys. Any info is appreciated.

That knife is not in production now. I looked back as far as the 2001 catalog and I did not see that knife as a production knife that camillus offered. The Pilot knife has the sawtooth that you are describing. Sounds like you have a collector on your hands. I will look back to see if any other collector can give some better insight.

I just won an Ebay auction that looks to have a serrated edge near the guard. I did not ask the seller, but just bid and won. Will post more when it arrives. It comes with a kevlar sheath, which I have never saw before, but for $35 with shipping, I'm happy with it.

Yes, that was a knife in our production line for a couple of years in the early 2000's. Pattern 5684MK. Comes with the partial serration, sawtooth edge on the back and a kydex sheath.

Thanks Knifeworker! I will make a note, and keep my eye open for another one. Mine came witha leather sheath. Were there a lot of these made?

I had two of them, paid through the nose for one, got the other one very cheap. I think one went to a BF member out west, and I sold another one. The one I paid through the nose for had a very loose guard, the other one I should have held onto. I liked the look of the sawback and the serrations, I personally think now that the knife could have done without the sawback. Serrations were pretty well worn down. I think that these models can be found on eBay pretty cheap. I had the box for one, and pitched it.

What is the purpose of the sawteeth on the Marine Combat and the Pilot Survival? Has anyone tried to cut plexiglass with it? I think that is what they are designed for (cockpit plexiglass). I'm curious if it works.

Plexisglass, perhaps. What I've read is the sawteeth were to help a downed pilot egress through the fuselage via cutting through the aluminum skin of the aircraft.
