Hi guys. I just had a few questions.
First off, I've been trying to decide on a fixed blade knife. I've narrowed it down to a few: Benchmade 220 Resistor, 210 Activator, or the 100SH2O. I had also been looking at what Spyderco has to offer, as I heard VG-10 is insanely sharp, but nothing quite struck my aesthetic fancy. (For those Spyderco fans out there -- that's not to say I don't appreciate Spyderco's utilitarian approach; I quite admire that, actually. I just have a stylish streak in me, and Spyderco mostly offers folders.)
This is to be used as a general utility knife: personal use, at work opening boxes, etc, etc. Between those three I mentioned, reading through tons of forum posts about personal experiences, blade steels, etc, I think I've almost decided on the 210.
What I'd like to ask you folks is:
1) What are your opinions on the whole 154CM vs S30V vs X15 T.N (H1) deal? I realise this could start a huge argument/thread, but I'm not looking to do that. Mainly, and this may be silly to ask, as Benchmade is reputable, but.. I'm wondering if Benchmade makes good use of hardening skills, as I've read that a good steel can go bad depending on how it's hardened, from company to company.
Also, as for why I'm considering a knife that's generally considered to be a dive knife (the 100SH2O): I like the way it looks, the handle seems like it would fit well in my hand (I have small hands -- I'm 105lbs), and I figure any corrosion resistance is a good thing in any knife, assuming it doesn't draw away from the knife's other abilities such as edge retention (which I've read H1 doesn't drastically reduce?)
2) Assuming I do decide upon the 210, would it be wise to just get the normal 210, or try to hunt down the limited edition 210-GG? And are there any important differences between the 210 and 210-GG? In one thread, someone noticed (as well as myself afterwards) that the HRC differs between the two.
I think that's all. I'd appreciate any personal experience with any of these knives, especially with their respective blade steels specific to these models; telling me that your S30V blade sucked from one company, or that your 154CM didn't keep an edge from another company doesn't help much.
Thanks a lot, guys. Sorry to be so specific and demanding, but I don't have a large amount of funds at my disposal; if I did, I'd get them all.
I'd just like to get myself a knife that will last a very long time; not take the route most people take and just get a cheap $10 knife for casual use. I like quality tools.
