Ive got the chance to buy a Buck Alpha folder ( not with gut hook ) with rosewood grips . Is the steel better than the std 110s and can they be owner stripped for cleaning , i noticed in the picture they have hex bolts on the handle . Thanks

Duncan

Duncan,
I have one of the Alpha hunters and the ATS34 steel is a step up from the standard 420HC. With the BOS heat treatment it will keep an edge and with the heft of the blade on the Alpha Hunter, it has been a good all around knife for me. I haven't tried to dis-assemble the knife but I would imagine that it should be no problem if you get the proper hex wrench.

Thanks Mike , i managed to find a picture of one with the handle off . I think the hex screws are just to hold the handles on , and i think its a torx head for the blade . Are they all made in the USA , i dont want to get it with China on the blade:(

Thanks

Dunc

Dunc,

Go for it. Mine is one of the smoothest opening large folders I have had my hands on. Very easy one hand opening and closing. It's just a little heavy but not a problem. And if it has the burgundy sheath, it is probably both vertical and horizontal carry. I really like that sheath!

Ive gone for it , just waiting for the guy to send me his paypal address so i can pay him . Its nearly mine :D That will make it my 2nd Buck

The Alpha Hunter is a great knife. (I own 2) I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Smoothest opening knife that I own. The only thing that I'd change is to make one with titanium bolsters (lighter) and G-10 scales. That'd make it perfect!

Been a 110/111 (3 dot) fan for decades. Consistently, one or the other is my EDC. Always a Buck, but now I find myself feeling unfaithful...
My 279...I'm finding myself getting my hands on it more and more often.

Got two 277 models (one with the Idaho imprint and one with the El Cajon) that are NIB for some crazy future reason.

Really wondering why I have almost a dozen diff 110, one 111, and the two 277 folders..all in their boxes or display case in the closet. I think I'm losing it. Why do I do this????

Anyway, enough of my self cleansing...I like the Alpha. Opens fast and strong blade. Next one will be a 277 for EDC.
Cheers...
Me.

Why Preston, you're absolutely right. ;) I even have a wanted add posted in the exchange forum looking for a nice "like New" three dot 110. We'll see what happens. Meanwhile, just when I thought it was safe to put away my wallet, a certain Buck customer relations rep decides to put up for auction, a late first version 110 with "Buck" etched on the back side of the blade.  What is one to do?
