Quick and dirty D-Guard

I bought a FBMLE from Busse awhile back, but the weight distribution and feel wasn't right for me, so I sold it. I saw a fellow Canuck had a modified ("banned") NMFBM for sale, so I picked it up. I always wanted to try one, but missed the window when it was being sold. Luckily, the feel on the NMFBM is great so I'm keeping it. As soon as a custom chopper is finished I hope to compare them in the woods.

The problem is I sucked at trying to make a woven D-Guard when I had the FBMLE. I tried chain but I didn't like the added weight, plus it flopped around. Finally, I thought of something which doesn't require skill to make, stays put, and provides the security I need when swinging such a big blade.

1/8" cable with pvc coating.
2 aluminum crush sleeves
bolt cutter
a little JB Weld to seal off the ends against dirt/whatever

It feels great, adds zero weight, and doesn't move around.

cool idea, a little heavier cable might look even better... more of a heavy duty look to it.

I may just have to see what the local marine supply and hardware store have in the way of cable...

I like it! I may try something similar with one of my Busse blades eventually. I agree that slightly heavier gauge cable would look even better.

I like the crush sleeves close to the end loops, and it was difficult to push them as close as they are now in the pics. I'd need to find some way to create more leverage with the heavier gauge cable. Maybe I'll get the wife to wrap her fingers around it and tug, then after she can do the same with the cable...
