quick bowdrill vid

Nicely done, RR! You have it down to an art. Now we need to see a video that goes from bowdrill to steaming cup of trail coffee in under 5 minutes. ;)

All the best,

- Mike

I see you've got that down to a science ... sweeeeet !
Is that an imported bowdrill or did you find the materials in the woods?

Thanks Rick, I edited out the 45 minutes of me breaking other sets as I swear and throw them about the forest.

great video Riley...:thumbup: that was pretty darn fast man.. way to go..:). i dig the music too..:D

Nice stuff, as I'm learning too I'm always looking for things to do and not do. As we all saw in the video you got a coal pretty fast. Something I noticed is that your back (right) knee is out and in the line of your bow hand. If you pull that in a bit you can get longer strokes. Just something to try, it obviously works the way you showed so it's not super important. :thumbup:

It took me about a month of working with my set before I got my first coal, and then about 2 weeks to where I could get a coal 3 out of 5 times... My biggest problem was keeping things locked in place(and still is at times).. I always wound up with hole in my board that was slanted outwards ... I'll have to try using a larger spindle also, but so far slim spindles are what I've been the most successful with...

Great Vid RR:thumbup::thumbup:

Good stuff RR....I think you need to work sequencing your bowing with the music though...Something like the Devil Went Down to Georgia....;)

Great stuff Riley, you should have your own TV show.....maybe not with that music though !!!

well Pride go'eth before the fall I tried for a good hour today with a sassafrass board and spindle ( new woods for me) to no avail... all the right elements where there... Lots of smoke nice Black dust..but no coal eventuall the spindle eats through the board...after many tries I tried to switch to the set I used yesterday.. But my arm is just too fatigued

Success decided to give it another go with a different wood (autumn olive) an invasive It was a sure thing with this wood but I needed to meet my coal a day challenge for october...Incidentally I just consulted a wood suitabilty database run by the Maine primitive skiils school where they listed sassafrass as a difficult wood. That makes me feel a little bit better.. but there is still no excuse

Cool....I tried the two stick tied together thing yesterday and no go....Used the same wood with a hearth and bingo....I'll keep trying the two stick thing, but haven't yet been successful with it..

Nice work Ken... I can;t believe whjat a greatr wood autumn olive is to work with,,If you have any in your area I highly reccommend it...although it can be fragile.. I plan on trying the 2 stick hearth board deal maybe using muellin or yucca stalks.
