So D2 doesn't have enough chrome to officially be considered a "stainless steel." But does it patina over time?

Yes it does get a patina, but not as dramatic as say 1095.

It also gets pits, more so than 1095. If I remember correctly, per a metalurgist post on this forum, that's because of it has "big carbides" and the chromium is not as evenly distributed as in other steels.

I agree with brownshoe, D2 seems to resist a patina, but pit more readily than straight carbon steel. I neglected to oil a queen folding hunter after carrying it in a sweaty pocket for a day. 2 weeks later when I opened it up there were tiny little black specks peppering the blade. A little metal polish and elbow grease took care of it, but it was surprising. I have used that folding hunter for a lot of apples, and meat cutting and had next to no patina form. Joe

The pitting is the thing to watch for the most, but even it's not a real problem most of the time.

Some of my Queen D2 knives that I have used the most and owned the longest have started to develop a very light greyish patina, but nothing like the black that 1095 will get.
