Quick fix for RAT Pack sharpener storage

Being that I've been a RAT Pack owner for about 2 hours I started to look at the issue of the included sharpener sticking out the bottom of the sheath and in many cases causing the zipper to pop open (mine arrived that way today). The sharpener is a nice little Smith diamond with the flat bar and tapered sharpening surfaces.

What I did was loosen the locking nut and slide the sharpener out. Then take a small drill bit and drill a hole in the black pastic plug in the end. This allows the tip of the sharpener to stick out the back a little bit, which is fine because it is all stored inside the sheath.

Then I took one of the inner strands out of a piece of paracord, tied it tight over above the lock nut so it couldn't slip over, then made a loop in the other end. This allows you to shove the sharpener all the way into the sheath and can pull it back out when you need to. No more busted zippers and no need to whittle a stick to punch the sharpener out of the sheath with in the field. The string tucks behind the sheath and is out of the way of the zipper.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Are you crazy?

The windchill is -7

It would be a good night to sleep in your shelter :)

By the way, good idea on the knife sharpener.

That's why I'm not smiling!

Ingenuity runs in the family. :D

Good idea, I might set mine up like that once I get it. Is your kit a kaki colored one? It looks more like OD.

Thanks. That's what my wife said, it looked OD. It looks pretty much khaki in person. The quality is excellent on this kit.

Good idea Bro! I just snapped the very tip of my sharpener off. Never used that last 1/4 inch anyway but getting it out was a problem.

You solved it.

First I tried a full piece of paracord as a loop, knotted and stuck in the end of the sharpener, but it didn't allow the lock nut to screw all the way on, which kind of defeated the purpose. This works pretty good so far but I'm always tweaking things. Thanks for looking.
