Hey Vance,

I'm a pretty good lurker at keeping tabs on what handle materials I see you post up on Wednesday's, and what is up for sale on Fridays. But I have to ask, does/do all the custom colored knives you make come thru here first; or do a few go out the door to other businesses first? Not stirring the pot so to speak; but it seems every once in a great while I see a handle material that I like; but don't see it on that Friday (only like 2-3 ever)???? Maybe they came out the next week?

Are these custom orders or take home ones? Just wondering.

I love the blue fire lava handle material btw!!

Thanks

Im not sure what you are referring exactly to so I will explain our operation.

-Scales being laminated on the tables
Once the handle material has been glued to the liner & pinstripe they become laminated scales. These are removed from the tables and taken to a grinder and trued up to remove excess. Once these are cleaned up they get glued into matched pairs & they go into an plastic bin w/ the appropriate label.
ie.."Burlap","Wood", " Bolstered" or "Large knives" and so on.

The scales remain in the tubs until Allen, Andy or Myself match them up with the heat treated knives they will be glued-up on.

-Knives having the scales glued-up
At any point in time we have 2-4 trays of knives that have a "square" shaped handle waiting for Andy to shape into a Fiddleback handle. Andy pulls from these on Monday & Tuesday. We also do the glue ups on Monday & Tuesday. So, as Andy is pulling from those trays we are going right behind him and filling up the slots. There is no rhyme or reason that I an aware of that he uses to pick the trays. If a knife you like lands in a tray and for some reason he isn't inspired to shape that tray it could sit back there for weeks.

We do have 8 or 10 dealers to that receive orders some knives are pulled from previous batches and some are pulled from previously unreleased knives.

We don't do custom orders

Im not sure if that helps or not but at least it explains our process a little better and why you may or may not see you preferred scales material immediately.

This could be a good idea for a sticky??

FAQ asked and answered by Phillip?

Might cut down on repeat questions via PM. I know I have a few questions ready to ask ;)

Phillip,
I had two that had been nagging but but one question has fallen through the hole in my head.

One curiosity is why no spine shots of knives for sale? FB knives have various handle contours and spine shots would show these off and help buyers decide better if that handle might be a fit.

While the view can be found through search- we all know that different knives of the same model may vary a bit in scale thickness.

Thanks,
Bill

There is a limited amount of characters you can have in a post. Unfortunately, the way we assemble the thread we have no way to know if we are over/under the character limit until we actually hit "Post new thread" and the forums software tells us.

25 +/- extra pictures will also slow the loading time of the thread. That would be extremely frustrating to the sharks w/ slow connections or accessing by phone.

I try to be pretty good about answering or accommodating such requests in the "Well it's Friday" thread.

Have you ever considered doing 3 pics of each knife on Fotki (left, right, spine) and then just one in the post? Folks should have had prior time to the post to review on Fotki plus the thread would load faster. Again not trying to make more work for you but spine pics have been requested before. This might be a middle ground??

+1 Spine shots for tapered and bolstered knives help a lot.

Yes, I'd also like spine shots
I like the spine shots for giving a clear view of the balance between the width of the blade vs. the scales, liner, pin striping, etc. It also gives you a good view of how the chosen colors work together, how a tapered tang looks in the mix. For example, we have a commando Arete in stock in OD green. The tapered tang against the scales with no liner and no pin striping just gives the knife a "sexy" look. Without that spine photo shot you wouldn't realize just how nice a job FF did on the knife.

We are constantly playing with different ways to get good photos of the knives and we've come to realize that spine shots add a lot of value to convey the beauty of the knife and the craftsmanship that went into making it.

I remembered my other question!! 50yr old and already getting senile....

The crest on the spine of the SylverFalcon and Gambler- purely style or is there some function here? Maybe to separate hide from meat with reduce risk of cutting skin?

Thanks,
Bill

He told me a reason with a smile. That led me to believe he was kidding around. So, Im going with it looks cool:thumbup:
