Hey all, hope your holiday weekend is going well. I've been searching for a 71 in micarta for a little bit. From what I've read the micarta versions were O1 while the derlin ones came with their 1095. When I find one available to purchase new the tube always says 1095. Am I reading about some special ones or reading jibjab? Or do the tubes just say it because they never switched the wording over for the micarta ones besides it being written on the lid?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

To my knowledge the 71's haven't been made in anything but 01 according to GEC's patterns made listed by date. The larger brother, the 21 bull buster on the other hand have only been made in 1095 in different variations. There were some special factory orders of the 71 for different coloured handle covers though as I recall.

Haha now I'm just confused. They're all 71's that I see listed? Are the 21's closer to the size of the case sodbuster junior. So far I have just seen them all listed as 71 bullbusters with tubes showing 1095. It's the micarta versions of the 71 I'm referring to.

Aaaa, there's my confusion. Thanks guys. They must be listed incorrectly because the blade lengths have been 4.5".

Honestly I don't get the appeal of the 21, yet there seem to have been a couple production runs of the 21 since the 71. I have a 71 in green linen micarta and it's a great size - larger than many, yet manageable. The 01 tool steel is a great steel as well. The extra 3/4" of the 21 doesn't appeal to me.

Agreed, Id much prefer the #71. The blade length and O1 seems perfect to me, plus that pure plain work knife look is lovely.

You play your harp?

Yeah, I mess around with it some. Had to get a tooth evened up after the last extended session, so I'm harp-shy now.

Sooooooooooooo, from your two post, I get the idea that you think the #21 is a bit "long in the tooth" for you????

As far as I know, all the #71 Bull Nose productions were 01 steel. I don't own a #21 any longer as I find the #71 a more useful size. I get better blade control in a more pocketable size in my opinion.
Here's a size comparison of the #71 with a Case Sodbuster Jr. which I also like for the size. You really can't beat a Case Soddie Jr. for the money. One of the better values in knives out there in my opinion.

As others have stated, the 71, to this point, has only been produced in 01 while the 21 Bullbuster has only been produced in 1095. Here is a pic of the 71 Bullnose with a 21 Bullbuster and an SFO lockback version of the 21 called a Mudbug.
