I pick up a Kobra a couple of weeks ago via the DOD. Problem is the brass butt plate extends beyond the horn handle. The butt plate is sharp and uncomfortable.

Do you think this is a result of horn shrinkage or is this a finish issue?

My solution is to file/sand the brass down until it's lined up with the horn.

Is there a better way to fix this?

Thanks guys.

It could be either. I suspect horn shrinkage. Be sure to "fill" the horn with something (mineral oil, Ballistol, Hooflex, etc.) and/or seal it (Watco Danish Oil, laquer, etc.) to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

That's exactly how I would deal with it. It's your tool now. If you need to change something to make it fit you better, don't be afraid to.

Yup...a normal occurrence with horn. Refitting the brass is the most common thing after sharpening.
