I have the opportunity to buy a used custom knife. Its carbon steel and the blade shows a lot of discoloration. More than just the grey patina, but lots of golds and blues. I have just seen pics but am concerned that its been in a heat source and the temper is gone. But do remember having a Western knife years and years ago that discolored the same whey when I used it to cut pizza and left the knife dirty overnight. Do you guys think these golds and blues should stop me from buying the knife. It is very very expensive. Help Jack

How does the handle look? Chances are that, if the handle is unaffected, the knife never got hot enough to ruin the temper of the blade. Pictures would help us.

Thank you, I can't do pics on line here, but the sheep horn handle is perfect. I had the seller email me several shots of the knife

Sounds like patina. Sheep horn will warp out of shape easily with heat. But, like stated without an image it's pure speculation.

I know Thank You. but I am unable to post pics her at work. I just wanted to get some opinions.

I agree with Chris, if the sheep horn handle is ok, the blade certainly should be. Probably cut something over the years that stained the blade.

A2 will show lots of 'color' in the patina with use, in my experience.....blues, golds, etc.
