Hi!

I would like to buy a Victorinox Soldier model.:)

I need your help in two questions:
-Is it good for an EDC knife?I like the one hand opening on my OH GAK,but I think I can live without it.

-In the shop, where I saw them, there were two pieces. One said 03 on the blade, the other said 04.I know that these are the years of manufacture, but is there any difference between the two knives,or are they the same?
I have to buy this knife tomorrow, because they have just two pieces.

Thanks for your help.

The soldier is most likely one of the best edc sak's out there. Most of the time I carry a pioneer or soldier. I like the solid feel of the soldier, and just the right amount of tools for alot of versitility in every day situations.

There is no difference that I know of between the 03 and 04. Heck, buy them both and have a spare, I heard Vic is raising prices in 06.

I agree that the Soldier is perfect for EDC! It's light and compact and yet very rugged. I have several Soldiers, including one from 1987. The previous owner(s) apparently used it a lot, but still it almost feels like a brand new one when I open and close the blade and the other tools.

You just can't beat a Soldier for ease of carrying, reliability, all around usefullness. I've carried one for years and no matter what else I might experiment with, I always end up with a Soldier back in my pocket.

The soldier re-awakened my interest in SAKs. It is a lot of knife for its light weight and strong as most people will ever need a knife to be. If you're looking for a hard working knife, it is one of the best you can get.

Just so you know that once you carry the Soldier, you'll soon find out that - having ONE is NEVER ENOUGH. For crying out loud; get 'em both Dude. One for use, the other for keeps. Or whatever. Just as long as you just do it soon rather than later. Did I just hear you say? "Soldiers" in da house.

So,I went to one of the local knife dealer here with my friend.
We bought 2 SOLDIERS.Both are 03 models.I love this little knife. It's a very good feeling,to hold this piece of art in the hand.

My friend isn't a knife nut, this is the first knife,he bought for himself. He has got an older SAK from his father, but he uses that just once or twice a year.He told me that he likes the soldier so much, that he will bring it every day.The beginning of a big thing:)

I picked up a Victorinox Soldier a few days ago for $16. I like it a lot. So what are some good uses for the awl?

Of course it works great on punching holes in a leather belt, but I have found the awl on both my Soldier as well as a couple of different multi tools I tote to work well for starting holes in dry wall. I mount a lot of instrument boxes in the ceiling in dry wall and don't always have a drill handy for drilling anchor holes. I've become so used to using a small awl that now I pretty much just rely on my multi tool or sak! Hope this helps.

I have the SAK Pioneer. It's similar to the Soldier but it has a keyring. I like the Pioneer, but it's simply too long for me to comfortably EDC in my front jeans pocket.

I usually reach for my SAK Cadet. It's got a nail file instead of an awl, but the nail file is pointed enough to use as an awl if need be. And the Cadet fits in my front pocket very nicely.

my EDC is a Recruit. With a small blade instead of the awl. Vic makes a model to suit every taste. Sometimes a bantam is all I carry for lighter chores.

The awl on the Soldier can also be used to put a hole in many plastics. Made a bait bucket in a pinch with mine. I have also used one when working construction to perforate the sides of a plastic container to prevent a water pump from sinking in the Texas mud during a rainstorm (back when it used to rain). The one on the Soldier is more efficient than the one on the back of my Tinker, IMHO.

I love the Soldier, but it is just a little too beefy for a weekday carry for me. During the week I like to carry my Cadet and I switch over to the Soldier on the weekend. The Soldier really feels great in the hand. Can't go wrong with either one.

I have been carrying a Soldier recently and love it (no scissors though!)
I have just ordered a Rancher as it has a small pruning blade instead of the can opener which would be more useful for me!
