I'm at wal mart getting the stuff to make a strop. What kind of metal polish do I get to put on the leather.

Thanks!

Simichrome maybe but I would use instead BarkRiver Green compound and get it online.

I would order some compounds made for strops. A full set of four grits is around $12 + shipping. If you just want two so you don't need more than one strop (or a four sided strop, which I would recommend) get the white, which is a medium compound and the green, which is fine. There's also a course black compound and an ultra fine red. Send me a PM if you want to know where to get this at.

Really looking for something I can get now at Walmart and then order some other stuff later. I don't mind spending money twice. Would brasso work?

I would try using the Dremel 421 polishing compound. You need something like this that is somewhat abrasive.

In the hardware section with the power tools. You'll see some Dremel rotary tools in the same section. The polishing compound should be in the same general area. Most likely hanging on a rack right above the rotary tools.

Looks like this:

Dremels in the hand tool section but I have not seen Dremel compound at my WalMart. Simichrome is in automotive and Turtle Wax polish can work.

I use the #6 compound. Fine metal polish. 3 or so dollars at the hardware store. 6+ years and I still have half the stick left. I bought 3 levels, but only ever need the green #6. It has a red top.

Brasso or Flitz both work alright but I prefer something more specific for strops. Lot of great compounds out there but you will have to order or pick up at a woodcraft type store.

I live in pine bluff Arkansas the people that work here can barely tell you where the front door is let alone dremel 421 metal polish. Lol

I'm not sure that your location has anything to do with the wal-mart employee's ineptitude. Wal-Mart doesn't exactly hire the creme-de-la-creme. They provide a lot of jobs for people that otherwise might not have employment, which is a great thing that they do. Providing top notch customer service and quality isn't something I would expect to get from wal-mart.

Too little too late, but Flitz works as a last compound. It's barely abrasive. Just a step above bare leather.

Best, in my opinion, to find some black emory and chrome oxide compounds. Readily and cheaply available online and are the same thing as what knife makers will sell you in their kits.
