I need to sharpen a D-2 blade and my Sharpmaker is not doing the trick. I have a Lansky as well and have not tried it. I don't have the diamonds for either. As of this moment I can buy the fine diamond for my Lansky and wonder if the fine will be coarse enough to get the edge a bit reprofiled enough to go back to the 204? Quick answers appreciated as I would like to do this today. Thanks and Take Care!!!

You need the diamond rods to sharpen D2 by hand.

You're better off with a med and high grit diamond rod. If you really have to reprofile, then use any coarse stone and be prepared for a battle...

Silicon carbide or aluminum oxide sandpaper is cheap and can be wrapped around one of your existing sharpmaker stones. Or it will last longer if you glue it around a hardwood dowel. Use the dowel freehand, clamped into a vise or workmate, or what I did is to whittle one end of the dowel to fit into the sharpmaker base.

Damn! So the Fine diamond would be too fine then? I only have the basic(coarse, med, fine) Lansky. The local shop only has the fine diamond.

No...the fine diamond is a must.

It's the coarse grit that's optional, IMHO.

Look at it this way:

You should reprofile your knife only every once in a while. The rest of the time, you should be "maintaining" the edge - keeping it sharp on the fine diamond hone. I recommended the med grit for setting the edge back into place.

IMHO, the coarse grit takes off too much steel...wastes your knife away.

SWEET!!!! Thanks Pendentive. Off to the local to pick up the diamond. Thanks again and Take Care!!!

The coarse regular stone will be far faster than a fine diamond one.
