I lurked for a while, signed up, then lurked some more. Thought I'd finally say hello. I'm a knife enthusiast and part-time maker from Knoxville, Tennessee. I most often use knives backpacking, camping and fishing.

My favorite BK is the Sweet 16. Most comfortable/natural feel in my hand of any knife I've owned.

Yep, this one is brand new. I recently put the old one in a box with some Kydex supplies I received in the mail. My wife accidentally threw away the box, the supplies, and the BK-16. Got this new replacement and added the neon green G-10 liners to the brown scales. Can't wait to break it in.

I'm looking forward to attending my first Gathering next month and hope to meet some of you there.

Mike

Welcome Mike!
Thanks for the intro and the pics.
Now that you're here, feel free to jump in to all that's going on around here! It's a good group and it's great to have a new guy around the campfire.

Oh it won't take much convincing for me to post about the Kephart. Someone might have to pump the brakes and tell me to shut up about it.

Like many Kephart fans, I read blogs and watched videos from Blade 2017 regarding Mr. Becker's newly acquired Colclesser Kephart. I didn't think at the time I would ever have it in my hands but E had it at a gun show a few weeks after Blade. It was awesome to be able to handle that knife and hear E's thoughts on it. With no ruler, I snapped a couple pics and used an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper for scale. We measured the thickness of the handle with a stack of quarters. High tech!

I'm a stock removal guy but I hammered on some 5160 and tried my first convex grind in my first attempt at the Colclesser. Walnut scales with stainless steel pins.

It looks ok and balances well but I missed several things with #1. Met with E and took some side-by-side pics, traced each knife, and took some better measurements.

I missed the dimensions a bit - made the handle too long and the blade too short. I also missed the handle contour and some of the subtleties. I also left the convex grind too thick which was bad for cutting performance.

For the next attempt(s), I cut 4 blanks out of an old sawmill blade. I corrected the scale and thought I could use the next four blanks to practice the convex grinding. Knife #2 is a little closer to the original but still not quite there. The convex grind is thinner so it cuts a lot better than #1.

I've started on Knife #3. I hope to have #3 finished before the Gathering but I'll at least bring #1 and #2.

Curious. Did you post a Kephart build thread on another forum? The first one you did?
