Ok see i am 12 and i live in a bad neighborhood and would like to carry a knife on me. Is it illegal i will use it for protection. I will not swing it around or show off. i want to carry a CRKT K.I.S.S. http://crkt.com/kissdark.html.
The blade is 2.5" long.

Sounds like trouble should you use it on someone. I'd carry a 24' hardwood stick and travel with a buddy.

It's a bad idea for anyone that's 12 to carry a knife for self defense purposes. You can get into a lot of trouble for having a knife like that.

What kind of situation would require you to need such a knife? Would multiple people be involved? If you used a knife against multiple attackers, possibly older then you, it's almost a guarantee that they will take the knife from you and possibly harm you with it.

Sometimes it's more dangerous to carry a knife for self defense then it is to go without one. I would find something else that isn't a knife, if you really feel like you need protection.

I would like to second what Nilaman said. To reinforce that statement, you would need training to effectively use a knife in a self-defense situation and I rather doubt that you will find anyone willing to rain a 12-year old in such martial arts. If you are in a situation where you are being threatened, try not to ever be alone, try to carry something like a length of broomstick with the ends rounded so as not to be sharp or jagged, or a knee-length sock loaded with sand or even just damp dirt, hard packed. Any of these will provide better protection than a knife and be less likely to get you hurt. They are also, on the whole, less likely to land you in trouble with the law. Well, the sock might in some jurisdictions where it could be seen as a form of club.
